Non-payment forces SMEs supplying the Gauteng Department of Health to shutter.
The Gauteng Department of Health has failed to pay as many as 19 212 invoices over the last 30 days according to the DA’s spokesperson for health in the province, Madeleine Hicklin.
“This is indicative of the systemic failure and unwillingness of the health department to deal with late payments and the devastating effect this has on service delivery throughout the healthcare system,” Hicklin explains. “Countless SMMEs had to shut their doors, adding to the burgeoning unemployment figures in this province, purely because of the SMME’s inability to continue to pay their workforce.
“It is believed that the Public Service Commission has had to intervene to assist some service providers who have lodged complaints against the department for non-payment. These service providers were eventually paid, but not before they were on the verge of bankruptcy,” says Hicklin. With suppliers not able to carry on functioning lest the Gauteng Department of Health pay up, this could be the start of a disaster as mpox cases increase.
Should Gauteng experience a surge in infections, the habitual non-payment by the Department of Health could lead to a crisis where citizens aren’t able to receive the quality care they require.
