Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi now says the new system will only roll out to government vehicles from 1 April 2024.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has walked back comments he made last week that all vehicles in the province would have toLesufi said this April launch date actually only applies to government vehicles. A launch date for the general public will be announced later.

“As soon as the Minister of Transport concurs with this legislation, Gauteng will be ready to ensure that we introduce new number plates.” He said the drive behind the project was to improve safety and security in the province, with cars being frequently used in violent crimes.
