The fourth heatwave of the year is expected to bring scorching temperatures, with the mercury soaring into the high thirties in some areas. Gauteng Weather, the regional weather forecaster, issued the warning, urging residents to take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.
The heatwave will affect various parts of the province, with the extreme north experiencing very hot weather. Other areas will see partly cloudy conditions with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers in the eastern regions. Johannesburg anticipates a minimum temperature of 19°C, rising to a very hot 33°C. Pretoria is also predicted to be hot, with temperatures starting at 21°C and reaching a scorching 35°C. Vereeniging is expected to see a minimum of 18°C, climbing to a high of 34°C.Robert Mulaudzi, a spokesperson for the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services, emphasized the importance of staying hydrated, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding direct sunlight, especially between 11 am and 3 pm. He advised those working outdoors to take frequent breaks and consume ample fluids to prevent heat exhaustion and heat cramps, which can potentially lead to heat stroke. Mulaudzi's warning comes as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms across several provinces, including KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), Mpumalanga, the Limpopo Valley, and parts of the Eastern Cape. The thunderstorms are expected to bring damaging winds, hail, localized flooding, and potential infrastructure and property damage. SAWS also warned of extremely high fire danger conditions in parts of the Northern Cape
