She beats fellow 18-year-old American Robin Montgomery, 6-3, 6-3
A smattering of rain first delayed and then suspended Coco Gauff’s round of 32 match against fellow 18-year-old American Robin Montgomery on Tuesday night, so the world No. 8 had to finish off a 6-3, 6-3 victory Wednesday afternoon at the WTA San Diego Open.
She displayed serious power and precision during an entertaining first set Tuesday night and earned several loud ovations from the crowd watching on the Barnes Tennis Center Stadium court. Because of Tuesday night’s rain suspension, Gauff’s round of 16 match against world No. 57 Bianca Andreescu was pushed to today.
In the late matches, American Danielle Collins defeated Italy’s Martina Trevistan 6-2, 6-4 before No. 4 seed Pegula took down San Diego’s CoCo Vandeweghe 6-3, 6-1 in an all-American battle. One day after knocking off world No. 6 Maria Sakkari with an impressive 7-6 , 6-1 victory, No. 77 Donna Vekic took down former No. 1 and current No. 27 Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 6-2 in the day’s first singles match.
