Gasoline prices in Bay Area zoom higher to vicinity of $5.50 a gallon
SAN JOSE — Bay Area gasoline prices zoomed toward $5.50 a gallon, fueled by ongoing economic uncertainties linked to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a new survey showed Monday.
The current regional average rose 27 cents in three days — or a jaw-dropping average of 9 cents a day from Friday through Monday morning. And the Bay Area average was up a head-spinning 43.2% from one year ago, this news organization’s analysis of the AAA gas price survey shows. Monday afternoon, motorists crammed into the two gas stations that are among the cheapest in the entire Bay Area. The stations, located in San Jose at the corner of McKee Road and North 33rd Street, are locked in a years-long price war. Moe’s Stop, where Quinones was filling up, was offering gasoline at $4.76 a gallon and Gas & Shop had posted prices of around $4.84. Both of those prices were for cash purchases.
“The prices are really high right now,” said Eduardo Cepeda, who was filling up at Moe’s Stop. “You have to work around your budget or find ways to make more money.”
