A Gary man who skipped his murder trial was sentenced Thursday to 58 years in prison for killing a 21-year-old man during a botched 2015 gas station robbery.

, 21, of Calumet Park, Illinois.Caldwell, along with co-defendants Walter Rondo, Dontrall Jer’i Phillips and Daidreon Sparks, met up before the robbery with plans that they “were to split the proceeds from the planned robbery,” the affidavit states. They “discussed robbing someone so they could smoke and drink,” according to the affidavit.Caldwell and the other men were charged in 2018. The other men signed pleas, while Caldwell was the only case to go to trial.
