A Gary man who skipped his murder trial was sentenced Thursday to 58 years in prison for killing a 21-year-old man during a botched 2015 gas station robbery.
, 21, of Calumet Park, Illinois.Caldwell, along with co-defendants Walter Rondo, Dontrall Jer’i Phillips and Daidreon Sparks, met up before the robbery with plans that they “were to split the proceeds from the planned robbery,” the affidavit states. They “discussed robbing someone so they could smoke and drink,” according to the affidavit.Caldwell and the other men were charged in 2018. The other men signed pleas, while Caldwell was the only case to go to trial.
Donald was the man of the house and the “protector”, she said. Still, this year she was grateful to get some “closure” with the case getting wrapped up. Caldwell had sparred with various lawyers since he was charged, demanding new public defenders, Anderson said. He was trying to stretch out his case, so co-defendants Sparks and Rondo would “get tired” of cooperating, which would blow a hole in the state’s case, he alleged.In clashing with past lawyers, Barnes retorted that Caldwell was a “young man” who “did not understand the gravity of the situation”.
