A Gary man was sentenced to 3.5 years Wednesday after admitting hitting a East Chicago cop car just before an officer opened fire — pinningCharles Winston, 23, pleaded guilty July 26 to battery resulting in serious bodily injury and carrying a handgun without a license, both level 5 felonies.The plea called for 18 months in the Indiana Department of Correction and two years on probation.Winston was shot in the neck, charges state. A female passenger was also wounded.
Nearby, the officer’s partner was training another police officer. He told the officer to pull into an empty spot in the intersection of Indianapolis Boulevard and Chicago Avenue to block Winston’s car and protect other drivers.
