A Gary man was charged Sept. 14 after allegedly shooting a gun in the air near a crowd to calm it down, he said.

Chequon Cook, 22, was charged with criminal recklessness and misdemeanor resisting law enforcement. He posted a $1,500 bond. His next court date is Sept. 29.Police were called at 1:35 a.m. Sept. 2 to a Dollar General, 555 W. Ridge Road, as well as a near a night club across the street.

A large crowd had been “arguing” and said a man shot a gun 5-10 times. He fled in a white Cadillac Escalade, they said.Cops found the Escalade and black Chevrolet Malibu parked near Ridge Lawn Cemetery, 4201 W Ridge Rd., with their hazard lights on. As the officer did a u-turn, both vehicles pulled off.

The patrolman pulled the Cadillac over after a couple blocks and arrested Cook, who momentarily resisted arrest, according to court documents.“Yea, it’s because I was shooting my gun to control the crowd,” he said. Cook said he was at the Dollar General parking lot, when he saw the unruly crowd arguing near the night club and tried to diffuse it by firing shots into the air.
