"It's an exciting young group of players. I spoke to guys before we signed and it sounds like guys want to win."
The 31-year-old winger had options when the unrestricted free agency market opened July 1, but after speaking with general manager Pierre Dorion and coach D.J. Smith, along with some players, Tarasenko was convinced Ottawa was the right choice. The Senators signed Tarasenko to a one-year, $5 million deal July 27. An unrestricted free agent, he finished last season with the New York Rangers after being dealt there by the St. Louis Blues in February.
“They basically told me what’s going on in the team, which makes us think this is the best fit for us and it’s very exciting,” Tarasenko said. “It’s very important to have a good group of guys,” Tarasenko said. “I was lucky to have that in the past, but talking to this group it feels like everybody is very close to each other.
Since it’s only a one-year deal, Tarasenko will be motivated to have success because it means he could get a longer-term deal down the road. He’d shown interest in returning to the Rangers, but they simply didn’t have the cap space to make the move. “Last year, it was Claude Giroux and this year our pro scouts and management group had a big debate about who was the best winger available, and Vladimir was definitely in that conversation.”
