TORONTO — This isn’t the start the new\u002Dlook Ottawa Senators expected by any stretch of the imagination.
“For the most part we played well but it definitely stinks,” captain Brady Tkachuk said. “We’ve got a very important game for us Tuesday so we’ve got to put this behind us. For the most part, we played a pretty good game and we had a solid team effort.Article content
The Senators went toe-to-toe with one of the NHL’s best teams Saturday night. Tied 1-1 in the third, an ill-advised interference penalty assessed to Parker Kelly allowed William Nylander to score the go-ahead goal for the Leafs.Article content “They threw it to the net and at that point we’ve got to be a little bit more desperate,” said coach D.J. Smith. “We’ve got to start knocking people down. We’re fishing for the puck and the puck bobbled to a guy and he just banged it in.Article contentGoing into the game, Smith had talked to the players about being better defensively than they were in Buffalo and cashing in on their chances.
The fact the Senators have only scored three goals in the first 120 minutes of the season is also a surprise. Buffalo goalie Craig Anderson was strong with 35 saves Thursday and was a big reason why the Senators went 0-for-4 with the man-advantage.
