English ivy can be an attractive plant found all over the UK but it is not easy to get rid of
English ivy is a common sight across the UK, usually found in chilly, shaded environs where the soil is characteristically fertile and damp. Often chosen for its aesthetically pleasing, colourful climbing tendrils, English ivy frequently decorates British gardens.
A gardener seeking advice on dealing with an unruly English ivy outbreak turned to the Gardening UK Facebook page to ask for tips on terminating the troublesome plant. David Vallance voiced his concerns, writing: "What's the best thing to kill ivy, need to get rid of it from fences, boundary walls?" If left unchecked, these roots continue to grow, moving deeper into the fence's wooden structure. Consequently, the wood may eventually succumb to rot or decay in response to root intrusion. Despite some group members advocating for methods like pouring boiling water on the ivy, many argued that such approaches would not eliminate the plant effectively as they "cannot penetrate the roots".
She added, "To actually stop it from coming back, dig dig dig, the roots spread and you'll likely pull up ivy shoots for years, but small shoots are easily managed." Sheila Morgan recommended: "Cut it off at the base, pull as much off as you can and the rest will die off. Then you need to dig up the roots. It's the only way to get rid of this plant forever."
