How A Small Light sets itself apart from other Holocaust retellings
's promotion has centred on Bel Powley's Miep, a real woman whose quiet heroism has long been overshadowed by the way in which history focussed on Anne Frank's diary.
Over the course of eight episodes, you get to know Miep and see her grow into the fighter she is. What the show does, however, is pin these grand themes on to two individuals: Miep and her husband, Jan . This is the show's biggest triumph. Anne Frank's story, and the story of her family, is so often told in complete isolation. She becomes hidden away again, stripped of her relationships with the real people whose lives she impacted.
