Martin, Game of Thrones first premiered in 2011, running for eight seasons before coming to an end in 2019. The show's ending was divisive to say the least, with Kit Harington's Jon stabbing Emilia Clarke's Daenerys after believing his lover to have become mad with power.

While Jon and Daenerys' story may have had a tragic ending on the show, the new art serves as a reminder that, in another life, the two could've been a happy ruling couple on the Iron Throne.
Killing Daenerys, then, was something Jon felt he needed to do for the good of all of Westeros. Daenerys' arc tracks and Jon's decision does as well, but the real issue with how their story plays out is that it feels rushed. The reduced episode count in the final seasons of Game of Thrones meant that Daenerys' evolution into becoming the Mad Queen was underdeveloped.
Ultimately, if the show had spent more time planting the seeds of Daenerys' downfall in the final season, the tragic ending to her love story with Jon would have been even more impactful. Although those who shipped the couple would likely still have been sad about this tragic ending, it would have at least felt earned and like a natural conclusion for their doomed romance.
