Galveston State Island Park will celebrate its completed renovations this week

On March 31, TPWD representatives will speak at the park and self-guided tours will be available. On April 1, the park will host prairie hikes, fishing and kayaking, beach walks and bay exploration at Lake Como.

The 2,000-acre park is split between a bay and a beachside. The bay side of the park reopened only a few months after Hurricane Ike hit, and remained open during renovations. The beachside of the parkas renovations neared completion. The park has had a 65 percent increase in visitations since the June reopening and organizers expect an annual visitation rate of 200,000 people a year.

Along with renovations that may help mitigate the threat of future hurricanes, a new park headquarters, 95 new campsites, two new restrooms, new roads, two new changing areas and showers, 20 new shade shelters and an equestrian day-use area was built. Since the beachside of the park reopened last year, Rhodes said the visitation to Galveston Island State Park has dramatically increased.
