ICYMI: Whatever the reason, the nostalgia veneration in St. John’s is alive and well and the latest homage to a bygone era is at Pop's Diner in Churchill Square.

Pop’s makes all the bread and buns for their sandwiches and burgers in-house. - Gabby PeytonWhen it comes to theme restaurants, 1950s diners have the market cornered. No other decade evokes such nostalgia as those fabulous 50s.

Whatever the reason, the nostalgia veneration in St. John’s is alive and well — it took three attempts to have lunch at Pop’s Diner, the new restaurant owned by Terri-Lynne and Percy Meadows, which has replaced Fort Amherst Pub in Churchill Square. I was turned away at the door twice for lunch after being quoted an hour wait on a Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. and a Thursday at 2 p.m. The third time was a charm .

The vibe, in general, is convivial and boisterous, with a beautiful vintage jukebox blaring great tunes of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. There was a lot of staff weaving through the tables; I counted at least six people greeting guests, clearing tables and making milkshakes. I also noticed an elderly patron sat at the bar and got fries right away — Pop’s already has regulars.Starting off, we agreed with our friendly server that milkshakes were a must.

I opted for the classic burger , with yet another add-on of $1 to make it a cheeseburger. Pop’s makes their own burger buns and bread and they’re quite good. When my cheeseburger first arrived at the table, I was worried about the appearance of the bun — it looked a little hard — and while it was a little over-toasted it was delicious, pillowy and had a good texture.
