It is no surprise that Futurama’s season 11 revival avoided earlier controversial storylines since the show’s continued existence is on thin ice without reminding viewers of failed episodes from years ago. However, season 11, episode 6 did avoid a major mistake that plagued the earlier revival that lasted from 2010-2013. “I Know What You Did Next Xmas,” a festive special that saw Futurama bring back Robot Santa, is the show’s first Christmas episode since 2010.
Futurama’s Latest Christmas Episode Isn’t An Anthology Story “I Know What You Did Next Xmas” is not an anthology outing, unlike the show’s last Christmas episode. Both season 7, episode 19, “Saturday Morning Fun Pit,” and season 6, episode 13, “The Futurama Holiday Spectacular” were disliked by fans, proving that the last revival didn’t have good luck when it came to anthology episodes.
Early in “I Know What You Did Next Xmas,” Amy and Kif’s children sat down to watch a Christmas special together. This allowed Futurama season 11 to mock the conventions and clichés of traditional Christmas specials without devoting the entire episode to a recreation of their aesthetic.
Futurama Season 11, Episode 6 Went Back To Basics Like season 2, episode 8, “Xmas Story”, and season 4, episode 2, “A Tale of Two Santas,” “I Know What You Did Next Xmas” featured a Robot Santa-centric story. While earlier episodes in Futurama season 11 brought Fry and Leela’s relationship, Nibbler’s connection with his owner, and Kif and Amy’s struggles with parenting to the forefront, the season’s Christmas special featured a sillier story with less emotional resonance.
