Manchester City have had some great European nights over the years, both in and out of the Champions League.
Well, there can only be one winner, can’t there? It doesn’t get much bigger or better than winning the famous trophy for the first time to complete the treble.
The Blues escaped from Madrid with the scores tied after De Bruyne excellently cancelled out Vinicius Junior’s opener, setting up a finely poised return fixture at the Etihad. City were eliminated by Madrid in stunning, agonising circumstances at the same stage 12 months earlier and that hung heavy over the encounter.
But unlike in Spain, City should have come away from Munich with the lead. Only a controversial penalty awarded for a dubious handball after a VAR review converted by Joshua Kimmich gave the Bundesliga champions a lifeline. Haaland scored first as a contentious penalty went City’s way and moments later he got a second as he headed in De Bruyne’s lightning crack of a shot as it bounced back off the crossbar. The Norwegian completed his hat-trick before half-time as he pounced to bundle home the ball as it rolled across the line.
