Last September I wrote and produced my one-man stage show “Once Upon a Farm” at The Center for Visual and Performing Arts in Munster, marking the 20-year anniversary of this newspaper column feature.
I included a segment about the many pets and other animal friends from our farm throughout the course of the past century. For example, a few years ago my dad made a number of wood duck nesting boxes to mount in the tall trees around our farm fields and also along my oldest brother’s farm pond. Rather than ducks, these wooden boxes seemed to attract owls, which were happy to poke their head out and look around when called to from below. It was humorous and reminiscent of children’s TV icon Mr.
com or call 574-231-1122. During her more than 30 years living in the South Bend area, my sister Pam has adopted five siamese cats from Pet Refuge, including one that was rescued from a house fire. At last weekend’s animal charity event, there was a recipe swap and sampling of dishes and my sister Pam’s nurse friend and co-worker Patty Girard brought with her an ages-old favorite appetizer dip recipe with an interesting history.
