Lucy Letby will be sentenced next week

Following a 10-month trial, the nurse was convicted of the heinous crimes by a jury. The 33-year-old former neonatal nurse was convicted of seven murders and attempting to murder six others in the neonatal unit of the Countess of Chester Hospital today .

Dr Stephen Brearey, head of the neonatal unit, reviewed the circumstances surrounding the case of Child D, and the ‘association’ of Letby to a number of collapses was identified, the jury heard.Next the nurse murdered Baby E, who died at 1.40am on August 4, 2015. He was one of twins who were ten weeks premature.

Three months after their deaths, the twins’ parents brought a hamper and a ‘thank you’ card into the unit. Police found pictures of the card on Letby’s phone after her arrest.Letby was found guilty of attempting to murder Baby G twice, and not guilty of a third charge of attempted murder. Baby G was born 14 weeks premature and weighed just over one pound after she was transferred to the Countess of Chester from another hospital on August 13, 2015, some three months after she was born.

The baby’s devastated mother bathed her dead infant and later told police that Letby came into the room and ‘was smiling and kept going on about how she was present at first bath and how much had loved it’. During her evidence Letby denied ‘getting a thrill’ from watching the despair in front of her, or from taking a photo of a sympathy card she sent to Baby I’s parents. The picture was still on her phone when police seized it.

His twin Baby M was born in a good condition even though he was small but his heart rate inexplicably dropped. He had to be resuscitated but collapsed a second time. Medical experts said air introduced into his system or a blocked airway were the most likely causes. Letby treated herself to a holiday in Ibiza with two friends. Before her return to work, she texted a pal ‘probably be back in with a bang lol’. She denied in court she was planning to do something dramatic, insisting it was because she would be returning on a busy shift.During her first shift back after her sunshine break, Letby murdered two of three triplets, also in June 2016. They were born seven weeks premature but were doing well. Baby O’s death shocked medics.
