Fred Khumalo | From Bushiri to Mboro: Why do South Africans fall for thugs masquerading as pastors?

He once delivered fish from the womb of a pregnant woman. Went to heaven where he took selfies with God. Went to hell and fought with the devil. Removed snakes from the bodies of miserable people. Made rain for drought-stricken Zimbabwe. Cured people of Aids. Made the lame regain their ability to walk.

He flung himself back into the news this week when he went to Matshediso Primary School in Katlehong, wielding two pangas. People do get tired of being duped and abused. Unfortunately, South Africa being the violent country that it is, people tend to resort to physicality that sometimes ends in bloodshed.

Since 2018, Mboro has faced allegations of misappropriating church funds for personal luxuries, including high-end cars and properties. “His lifestyle is so extravagant. It makes you question how the church’s money is being used,” noted local resident Kabelo Radebe. Pastor Phumzile Topie of the Favours Church forced members of the congregation to drink engine oil in order to rid them of demonic spirits and witchcraft.

In 2023, Siphesihle Tatsi, a 23-year-old worshipper at Mancoba Seven Angels Ministries, was sentenced to 241 years for the murders. It was a sensational trial that held the nation in thrall. This trial happened against the backdrop of another church-related drama. That men of the cloth are finding themselves on the wrong side of the law should be ringing alarm bells across the land.
