'I always said that if there were more people like Ian Coates in the world, the world would be a better place'
Friends of Ian Coates say his death has left a "massive hole" in Bulwell as they revealed the van reportedly stolen from him during the Nottingham attacks was part of his retirement plan. Mr Coates, 65, was one of three killed on Tuesday in a spate of violence that also left three people in hospital, one of them in a critical condition.

The club works in association with the The Top House, with several of their trophies being proudly displayed by the bar, and Ian Coates was a regular face at the pub given his membership of Lake Snakes. Ben Dutton was just 13 when he first met Mr Coates as a pupil at River Leen.
Marie Higgins, landlady at Top House, said: "He was part of the fishing club who come here, I didn't know him but his face is familiar. He's well known to local people, and people have been talking about him - how they knew him at school and things like that and flowers were left for him at Bulwell Academy. It has been an awful thing, I teared up watching the vigil [in Old Market Square on Thursday, June 15].
