Friends & Friction| South Africans are incredibly uncomfortable talking about their history. We must be the only people in the world who are told to forget their past, and we are all the poorer for it, writes Muzi Kuzwayo

It is not about repeating events and the dates on which they occurred. It is certainly not about settling scores or guilt-tripping each other, but about understanding the true character of our nation. It is the difficulties that show our true character. The good times are only a fleeting season.

It is only those who are living in the present who can afford the luxury of being pessimistic. Those who understand the good and the bad patches of history know that darkness is like the night. It dissipates. But darkness is a state of mind. To the owl, it is the beginning of a work day. It is the time to start hunting.

The fact that so many people have chosen South Africa as the promised land, is testimony to the progress that we have made. Evidence shows that migrants are not parasites, as we are made to believe, but active contributors to the South African economy.
