When Cyril Ramaphosa took over the reins from Jacob Zuma in February last year, the country heaved a collective sigh of relief. It was like coming up for air after years of holding our breath.
We rejoiced in his"thuma mina" call and praised him when he fired Tom Moyane, appointed a new board for Eskom and reshuffled Cabinet. But Ramaphosa's quick victories were soon befuddled by the ongoing factional battles in the ANC and the realities of the economic mess left by the Zuma era.
Now, as he stands on the precipice of his first full term as president of South Africa with a mandate from the people, will we finally see the new dawn break? His task is immense and he will be tackling it with resistance around every corner.
