Bone-chilling temperatures gripped the Bay Area overnight.

, but some locations stayed in the upper 30s to low 40s, according to the National Weather Service. A few spots saw temperatures in the 20s, including a gauge in Point Reyes, another in Petaluma and a weather station in the San Antonio Valley in eastern Santa Clara County.

The weather service's downtown San Francisco gauge measured a low of 43 degrees, while some unofficial weather stations recorded lows of 38, 40, 41 and 42. "The wind stayed up just a little bit more than expected and those winds keep things mixed and stirred up and that doesn’t allow the temperatures to drop as fast," said weather service forecaster Sean Miller.

The chilly weather comes after cold air pushed into Northern California behind a weak storm system that moved across the region Sunday. The cold snap is forecast to continue through midweek. Tuesday morning temperatures will be similar to those Monday morning, and possibly a degree or two colder. The weather service had a frost advisory in effect Monday morning for a large swath of the Bay Area and issued one for Monday night and Tuesday morning.

"We'll see temperatures closer to normal as we head into the weekend," Miller said."Highs will be closer to the 60s and lows in the 40s with some upper 30s in the cooler valleys."
