FreedomDay: 'Freedom means nothing to the people of Makhanda'
“The last time I benefited from this freedom thing was during Mandela’s time,” said Xakiwe Futshane, 54, seated outside Miki Yili Stadium in Makhanda following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Freedom Day address on the theme Celebrating 25 Years of Freedom, on Saturday. “During Mandela’s time I got this one-room house here in Six . That was the last time I got anything from this government. Freedom means nothing to the people of Makhanda.
He called on South Africans to reflect on the progress made in setting right the wrongs of the past, “in bringing development to communities where there was once neglect, in restoring human dignity where there was once only contempt”. He concluded by encouraging people to vote on May 8 and work together to overcome the country’s challenges.
“Our taps were only switched on at the beginning of this month. Last week we saw refuse collection happening, something we have not seen in months. Grahamstown is clean today, but our drains are still leaking. Surely, this cannot be freedom.”
