Free State health department condemns patients who looted a booze truck en route to hospital

While condemning the behaviour of patients who were captured on social media platforms helping themselves to alcohol from a jackknifed truck on the N8 on Tuesday, the department of health in the Free State was quick to absolve government officials of any wrongdoing.

Departmental spokesperson Mondli Mvambi said the department wished to set the record straight that this act was not perpetuated by government officials responsible for the transportation of patients.He said the incident happened on Tuesday when the patients on government’s planned patient transport were en route from Dr JS Moroka Hospital in Thaba Nchu to Pelonomi Tertiary Hospital for specialist care.

He added that the patients in question got off the transport to loot alcohol from the stationary truck and loaded the beverages on the state vehicle, leaving the healthcare staff stunned.He said this was unacceptable conduct that made a mockery of the department’s efforts to provide quality services to the people of the province.“It is our trust that such ugly scenes will never repeat themselves even to be associated with the department of health.
