Free composting available for Christmas trees until end of January yyc

The city has set up 13 drop-off locations, in addition to the city’s three landfills, where residents can leave trees to be composted. Sharon Howland, leader of program management for waste and recycling services, said trees can also be disposed of in green bins. She said the trees need to be broken down to a point where they can fit in the bin, and extra branches can be placed in paper yard waste bags.

“All of the trees are composted at the Calgary composting facility,” said Howland. “The trees are ground down and blended with all of the other green current materials and we produce a nutrient-rich compost that’s used by farmers and landscapers in the Calgary region, as well as given away to Calgarians every year during our annual compost giveaway.”

“Customers need to remove all tree decorations, and then leave the bare tree outside their property,” said Klingbeil. “We can usually have someone out within 24 hours of their request being submitted, and often much quicker than that.”For those who do not compost their trees, the National Christmas Tree Association in the United States says trees can also be used to create bird feeders in backyards or can be sunk into private ponds to be used as a fish feeder.
