'This was a despicable crime that saw someone try to capitalise on the deaths of four young men'

A Wellingborough fraudster who set up a fake GoFundMe page following the deaths of four men in a car crash has been branded by police as 'despicable'. Jason MacDonald, 38, was found guilty of two offences on Friday, October 28 and was sentenced to 26 months imprisonment.

McDonald, of Blackbird Court, created the appeal in memory of four men from Calne, Wiltshire who lost their lives in the collision in August 2022, a court heard. Jordan Rawlings, 20, Corey Owen, 19, Matthew Parke, 19, and Ryan Nelson, 20, were killed when the car they were travelling in left the road near Chippenham.

Police investigated the page - which McDonald titled ‘Jordan, Corey, Matt, Ryan Memorial’ - and established it was fraudulent. He was arrested and later charged with the offence of 'possessing criminal property' relating to the fraud and a charge of possession with intent to supply class A drugs.Investigating Officer Detective constable Kevin Golledge said: “We hope this result sends a strong message to others that we take such incidents seriously and we won’t hesitate to take action.

Police Sergeant Rich Marshall added: “This is a crime that has impacted the four children’s family and the people who paid into the donation account. We hope the sentencing will show that justice has been done and I hope this brings some closure for the families of the four young men."At NorthantsLive we're more than just news.
