So far, more than 4,000 homeowners have filed an appeal with the Franklin County Board of Revisions since November. On average, the values of the 450,000 jumped by 41% countywide last year. Franklin County Auditor Michael Stinziano said the filing events are a way for homeowners to tell appraisers why they think their"If you look outside with all the rain that is occurring, if there is water in the basement, that is creating mold and drywall conditions," Auditor Stinziano told ABC6 On Your Side Problem Solver at the filing event at Marion Franklin Community Center Wednesday evening.
However, Auditor Stinziano said a hike in property value does not automatically mean a hike in property tax. Of the 283,000 owner-occupied homes in Franklin County, 12% saw an increase in property taxes by $1,000 or more. 27% saw an increase of $500 to $1,000 this year. 35% saw an increase of $500 or less. The auditor recommends bringing photos of inside a home, compatible home sales, or a third-party appraisal to aid in the appeal process. Of the 10,000 property owners who requested a review of their values last year when tentative values came out in August, 2% saw a change in their value.
