A federal Chamber of Citizen Representatives would provide a healthy counterbalance to the power of political parties
In his farewell address as president eight years later, Washington warned the young republic to avoid the pitfalls of partisan politics, saying it was the duty of American citizens to “discourage and restrain” the power of political parties.
In short, president Washington warned against the rise of party politics and the lack of an effective check on the growing power wielded by these political parties and the new class of professional politicians who represented their interests.Article contentMany believe Washington’s prophetic warning has come to pass
Under my proposal, citizen representatives would have an important role in approving all legislation. They would vote on bills brought before the House of Commons and would cast their votes at the same time as the elected politicians serving in the House, and the two separate sets of votes would then be added together. A simple majority of votes would be required to pass a bill.
Since writing the column, I received a number of thoughtful comments and suggestions from National Post readers, many of whom liked the concept of citizen representatives, finding it be to a common-sense solution that could restore some power and control to the people.Article content
