A new power\u002Dsharing deal in Canada is long overdue, writes Diane Francis. Read more.

“We’ve always been treated like a subordinate level of government,” Smith said in an interview on CTV’s “Question Period” on Sunday. “We’ve acted like it. But we’re going to stop acting like that. We’re going to take our place as a senior partner in Confederation. We will not have our resources landlocked or our energy phased out of existence by a virtue-signalling prime minister.

She wants for Alberta what Quebec has had for years: provincial institutions that collect taxes, administer its own pension plan and police force, and have a greater say over immigration. She also intends to challenge Ottawa when it imposes unnecessary and damaging controls, taxes and needless regulations in areas of provincial responsibility, such as resource and economic development.

“Bill C-69 unilaterally rewrites the Constitution. All 10 provinces are fighting this. We are going to turn the tables and not enforce this and other laws and then they can fight us in the courts,” she said in a television interview. This amounts to reversing the onus because, in the past, Ottawa has trampled provincial laws and forced the provinces to fight in court to restore them.

Valid grievances underpin Smith’s platform. Albertans have been abused by the Trudeau government, as a report from the Alberta government’s Public Inquiry into Anti-Alberta Energy Campaigns revealed.
