Residents of France Extension in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, protest the lack of proper sanitation facilities despite living in RDP housing for over two decades. Many homes rely on shared portable toilets or UNhygienic buckets. The local councillor promises future improvements but acknowledges budget constraints.
Several residents of France Extension in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa , contend that over two decades after the construction of RDP housing in their community near Edendale, they are still forced to rely on inadequate sanitation facilities. Although many households in the area now possess portable toilets in their yards, residents maintain that these offer little improvement over the initial 10-liter plastic buckets provided by the Umsunduzi municipality.
They express concerns about certain areas where three or more households share a single portable toilet, which is emptied weekly by municipal workers.Bongani Zuke, one of the first residents of the France Extension area, underscores the unhygienic and undignified nature of the bucket toilets. As a female resident, Zuke describes the discomfort of encountering male neighbors while using the shared facilities, highlighting the potential for inappropriate interactions. She further expresses concern about the easy spread of communicable diseases when multiple families utilize the same toilet and bucket. Zuke also criticizes the municipality for failing to provide residents with cleaning supplies, forcing individuals to spend their own money to maintain basic sanitation.Ward councillor Simphiwe Buthelezi acknowledges that the development of the residential area was premature without proper sanitation infrastructure. He discloses that the municipality has constructed 190 pit latrines in the area thus far. Furthermore, Buthelezi reveals plans to connect France Extension to a sewage pipeline currently being installed in a neighboring area. However, he admits to the municipality's budgetary constraints, which impede his ability to provide specific timelines for these developments. Buthelezi emphasizes that they have a plan in progress to install mainlines that will benefit the residents of France Extension, enabling them to construct their own sanitation systems.
