French labor strikes force postponement of King Charles’s first overseas visit, which was set to begin Sunday
LONDON — The French president’s office announced Friday that a state visit by Britain’s King Charles III was postponed as protests against raising the retirement age roil the country.
Strikes in France brought trains to a halt on Thursday as protesters flooded the streets, clashing with police in some cities, in a burst of defiance after the government pushed through legislation to raise the retirement age by two years to 64.As unions call for a new round of nationwide mobilization on Tuesday, the visit by Charles has been postponed, the French presidential office said in an email, without specifying a new date.
Macron had been preparing to host Charles and Camilla, Queen Consort, next week. The royal pair were scheduled to be in France from Sunday to Wednesday, before continuing on to Germany — the first state visit of his reign.
