A new study using 3D scanning technology has definitively confirmed the existence of four distinct giraffe species, challenging the long-held belief that giraffes were a single species. This finding has significant implications for giraffe conservation.

A groundbreaking study led by the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the Giraffe Conservation Foundation has definitively confirmed the existence of four distinct giraffe species using 3D scanning technology. This finding, which aligns with previous genetic analyses, sheds new light on the diversity and conservation needs of these iconic African mammals. The research team, spearheaded by postdoctoral fellow, Dr.

Kargopoulos, embarked on a global expedition to 3D-scan a comprehensive dataset of 515 giraffe skulls sourced from African national parks, game farms, taxidermists, and museum collections. Dr. Kargopoulos noted the unexpected clarity of the skull shape differences between giraffes, highlighting the significance of this comprehensive data collection effort. The study employed 3D geometric morphometrics analysis, a powerful technique for comparing shapes. By placing specific landmarks on the 3D models of the skulls, the researchers were able to capture the overall shape of each skull. Statistical tools then compared the exact position of these landmarks between all the skulls, revealing distinct differences between male and female skulls as well as confirming the existence of four distinct species. These differences are largely linked to the ossicones, the bony protrusions on their heads. The study's findings are crucial for prioritizing conservation efforts as the number of giraffes in the wild continues to decline. The research team emphasizes that the current IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List, while globally recognized, does not yet officially recognize the four giraffe species. The authors hope that this study will prompt the IUCN to update its classification, paving the way for targeted conservation strategies for each species. They call for immediate action to protect all four species, particularly those with critically low populations, before it's too late. The team's findings underscore the importance of ongoing research and collaboration in unraveling the complex biodiversity of our planet and ensuring the long-term survival of iconic species like the giraffe
