De-commissioned patrol boat HMAS Maitland will be turned into a robot vessel under a deal between Austal Limited and the navy.
Austal has taken possession of a de-commissioned Armidale-class patrol boat from the Commonwealth to start modifications followed by testing of autonomous and remotely operated technology in sea trials scheduled for next year.
The trial is aimed at providing a proof-of-concept demonstrator vessel that can be operated by a crew or autonomously for the RAN.It will also explore the legal and regulatory approvals required to operate an autonomous vessel at sea. Austal chief executive Paddy Greg said the company wanted to design and build ships that could “outsmart” adversaries and improve the Australian Defence Force’s ability to “fight and win at sea”.
“Austal are pleased to be at the heart of Australia’s autonomous naval journey, working with our industry partners, navy and the Commonwealth, to complete the modification and trials, and share this data to improve the wider knowledge base.”
