Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson, a former title contender in the UFC and Bellator, died Sunday at the age of 38. Bellator confirmed the passing in a statement, saying the organization is “devastated by his untimely passing and we send our condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.”
In 2021, Johnson shared on Instagram about an illness he was suffering from: “Really wish I could go into detail about how ill I truly am. Just know I need as many prayers as I can get and I’ll see you in 2022 God willing… Never been afraid of anything in my life but I’ve remained strong with the support of friends and family.”Johnson’s final fight came in May 2021 and served as a powerful encapsulation of his career.
While fighting in the UFC in multiple stints from 2007 to 2017, Johnson earned a reputation as a feared knockout artist and a fighter that remarkably found success at four different weight classes, winning at welterweight, middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight. He tallied 23 career wins, 17 of which came by knockout.
His most impressive stretch came from 2012 to 2017. After leaving the UFC for Titan FC , ‘Rumble’ settled in at the light heavyweight division and won 12 of his next 14 fights. The only losses in that span came against Daniel Cormier in bouts for the UFC light heavyweight title. Johnson exited the UFC after the second Cormier loss with wins over champions Glover Teixeira, Ryan Bader, Antonio Nogueira and Andrei Arlovski, as well as wins over title challengers Phil Davis, Alexander Gustafsson and Dan Hardy.Subscribe to The Athletic for in-depth coverage of your favorite players, teams, leagues and clubs.
