“We all feel a bit invincible, let’s put it that way, and sometimes when health issues visit your door you realise that the invincibility isn’t quite as strong.'
In the days after the grim news of Jody Gormley’s terminal diagnosis emerged in late October, a gathering was held in his honour.

You nearly thought, ‘Yeah, I understand, I hear it all’ but you just didn’t quite expect it as quickly as it all developed.
It proved to be the last time that they saw each other, with Jody passing away yesterday at the age of 53. “We all feel a bit invincible, let’s put it that way, and sometimes when health issues visit your door you realise that the invincibility isn’t quite as strong and so I feel particularly grateful that I’m as well as I am and listen, relative to Jody’s position, I ought not to really be in any way put out because Jody has ultimately paid the ultimate sacrifice.”
“He was happy to take on the biggest of big challenges and faced it with absolute positivity and there was semblance of that in how he dealt with this challenge but I don’t want to compare football to life’s ultimate challenges and the challenge of his real ill-health, but it was the same Jody that stood forward in this instance and stood forward over all those years that I played with him.”
