Former Treasury DG Mogajane denies bribery allegations by ex-VBS chairperson
Dondo Mogajane, former director-general of the National Treasury, on Friday denied allegations of corruption levelled against him by convicted ex-VBS Mutual Bank chairperson, Tshifhiwa MatodziIn a statement released on Friday, Mogajane rebutted claims that he accepted a R1 million bribe to prevent municipalities from withdrawing their investments from the now-defunct bank.
According to Mogajane, during his tenure as the Treasury's DG, he consistently upheld regulatory standards, especially regarding municipal investments in mutual banks. He clarified that meetings with VBS and Matodzi were part of efforts to enforce these regulations and not to facilitate any illegal dealings.
"I met with Matodzi several times during my tenure. These meetings followed a circular issued by the National Treasury in August 2017 warning municipalities that deposits made at a mutual bank contravened municipal finance regulations and were not allowed. He added that he filed all affidavits, statements, minutes of meetings, circulars and general records dating as far back as 2017 with the relevant authorities.I will not be trialled by corrupt individuals or those driving their own agendas, and I will not allow anyone to tarnish my name.
