Under Glass, the new commissioner, Williams will serve in an agency that critics have said has become more politicized under former Gov. Rick Scott and now DeSantis, who, the Sun Sentinel reported, has become frustrated the agency has not more aggressively combated illegal immigration. Williams took over JSO as the hand-picked successor to former Sheriff John Rutherford, who is now in Congress. During his tenure, Williams, Mayor Lenny Curry and State Attorney Melissa Nelson confronted some of the deadliest years in the city's modern history. Williams oversaw the implementation of body cameras, and he played afrom holding the days-long events in the city during the 2020 presidential election because of his concerns over logistics and safety.
