Qatar suffered the ignominy of becoming the first ever host nation to lose their first match at the FIFA World Cup on Sunday when they suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Group A rivals Ecuador in this year's tournament opener at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor.

Confusion reigned supreme at the VAR's decision to overturn the goal as Estrada initially appeared to have been onside when playing the ball, but an oft-misunderstood rule meant Qatar goalkeeper Saad Al Sheeb had in fact played him offside when he ventured beyond the last man in his own defence. "The goalkeeper is just another player who only wears a different colour jersey so that the referee can identify him as being allowed to handle the ball in the 18-year-area," Dr. Sweeney tells "The rules say two players . It doesn't have to be a goalkeeper and defender, it can be a forward and a full-back or whatever, as long as there are two players.
