The former Pittsburgh Pirate and Duke star spent the latter half of his life calling Pitt basketball games on radio.
A man with one of the more impressive resumes has passed away, as word came out that Pittsburgh sports legend Dick Groat died at the age at the age of 92 on Thursday.
He played one season for the Fort Wayne Pistons, averaging over 11 points, before enlisting in the military for two years. After returning, Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Branch Rickey told him not to pursue a dual-sport career due to health risks. Groat retired from baseball in 1967 after stints with the Cardinals, Phillies and Giants, and then returned to Pittsburgh, where he served as a Pitt basketball radio analyst from 1979 to 2019.
