The fire happened on Oct. 10, inside a conference room in the school's front office, according to the complaint., which was put out with a fire extinguisher by a school employee. In interviews with school officials, investigators were pointed toward Castorena-Narvaez. The school principal told investigators that there had been recent"financial problems" at the school, and that Castorena-Narvaez, who was in charge of depositing cash from school fundraisers, had been avoiding meetings to talk about missing money.

During the arson investigation, Castorena-Narvaez told investigators that she was in the office across from the conference room alone at the time of the fire, according to the complaint. She said she didn't know about the fire until she smelled something burning, according to the complaint.
