Alberta Justice Shaina Leonard found Dr. Albert de Villiers guilty of sexual assault, sexual interference for molesting son of family friend
The case is next in court Feb. 13 to set a date for sentencing. Leonard stayed a sexual assault charge against de Villiers for procedural reasons at the request of the Crown.
De Villiers left Grande Prairie in July 2020 for the top public health job in Interior Health. The families stayed in touch, but the mother grew uncomfortable when de Villiers’ repeatedly asked the boy to wear headphones during video calls. The voicemail became a key piece of evidence at trial. De Villiers claimed he was apologizing for becoming overly involved in the boy’s life, telling court he believed the family was angry because he’d overstepped his boundaries as a family friend. He denied having any sexual contact with the boy but admitted he had become overly close, sharing a tent with the children on one occasion in their backyard without telling their parents.
“it has never happened before and it will never happen with anyone else again” and “I did wrong things and I take responsibility” — was an obvious admission.
