Once a hightly touted MLB prospect, Lewis Brinson trying to stick with Astros
Lewis Brinson might be helped by an-early season provision that, in light of MLB’s condensed spring training, will expand rosters to 28.PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Lewis Brinson began his career as a centerpiece. Publications pegged him one of baseball’s best 20 prospects before the 2018 season. The Milwaukee Brewers parted with him as part of the massive package to acquire Christian Yelich from the Miami Marlins.
“I had a nice little stretch there last year,” Brinson said, “but I want to be consistent for a little bit more than a month.”To hang on in Houston, it is a must. The Astros signed Brinson to a minor league deal on the day spring training started. At worst, he is camp depth to create competition for Chas McCormick and Jose Siri in center field. At best, the Astros can solve some of the flaws that breed his inconsistency.
McCormick is not a natural center fielder. Siri is, but he profiles more as a fourth outfielder and is far too unpredictable to trust on an everyday basis. Provided he stays healthy, utility man Niko Goodrum now seems to have a realistic chance to break camp with Houston and afford Baker a bevy of options in Meyers’ absence.
