Professor Feast committed his life’s work to establishing and growing astronomy in South Africa.

Respected researcher and former director of the National Research Foundation’s South African Astronomical Observatory , Professor Michael Feast, has died aged 92, the foundation said on Wednesday.

During his tenure at SAAO, Feast and his colleagues worked to provide a much better understanding of the structure of the galaxy and a new calibration of the extragalactic distance scale. In addition to holding influential positions within the International Astronomical Union, Feast was an honorary professor in the astronomy department at the University of Cape Town, a founding member of the Academy of Science of South Africa, an honorary fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and a fellow of the Royal Society of South Africa and the South African Institute of Physics.
