Davis and directed by her son, Greek filmmaker Niko Volonakis. “When I moved up here, I didn’t know what to expect based on Hollywood troupes. I found it to be completely different,” she says. While a romantic psychological thriller loosely inspired by actual serial killings not far from Davis’ house may not seem like a love letter you’d want to get, it was filmed in and around the town, renamed River Oaks — the movie’s true star.
Her son was visiting to shoot a scene in the area for his own nearly finished film when everything shut down here and in Greece. “We decided to raise money. We actually got investors, which total blows me away, because when you think about it, I’m a middle-aged novelist who’s never done a film before,” she says with a laugh.
