The article discusses the shifting landscape in the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL), where Orlando Pirates is gaining traction over the dominant Mamelodi Sundowns.
Mamelodi Sundowns have dominated the PSL for most of the last decade, clearing previous year’s runners-up Pirates by twenty-three points, winning their seventh successive PSL by a landslide. For years they have had the pick of the bunch, buying top African targets with ease as they continued to be the safest bet for silverware. While that is still the case, and they have something the Brazilians don't: a die-hard fan base that stretches from Limpopo to Cape Town.
There’s a stark contrast in the number of fans present at Sundowns and Pirates games, with the latter able to draw a substantial crowd in any part of the country. Adding more prestige to the Soweto side is their recent form, winning the MTN 8 Cup for the third successive time, between a seven-game opening season winning streak for the first time in its history. And with Kaizer Chiefs spiralling out of control, players don’t have much other choice in the PSL than Sundowns and Pirates if they want to fight for the title and CAF Champions League, which is what every star player wants. It wouldn’t be a surprise if some of Africa’s biggest names begin dismissing Ka bo Yellow for the Buccaneers.
