With high temperatures and wind in the forecast this week, conditions are ripe for forest fires
The fire hazard is high to extreme across the Northeast Region, according to Ontario's Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services, and the forecast up until Friday is for hot and dry weather, accompanied by wind gusts around 20 kilometres per hour — prime conditions for the spread of forest fires.
The Environment Canada forecast for Sudbury calls for temperatures to hit 30C today, 31C on both Wednesday and Thursday and 30C on Friday. Greater Sudbury and the region is under an extreme fire hazard, as is most of the northeast and northwest from the border of Quebec amost to the Manitoba border. There is no fire ban in effect in the city as of yet.The closest fire is south of the city, just 1.5 kilometres west of Highway 69 close to Round Lake. The Sudbury 4 fire is about five hectares in size and is listed as under control.
AFFES reminds the public to use caution when performing any outdoor burning. In order to dispose of yard waste and woody debris, you are encouraged to use methods such as composting or using your local landfill. If you must burn, follow Ontario’s outdoor burning regulations. Fires are to be ignited no earlier than two hours before sunset and extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise. Always have tools/water adequate to contain the fire at the site.
