The third rail of New Jersey politics.

Springsteen, diners, the shore, the debate over whether it’s Taylor ham or pork roll ...we can all agree these are parts of New Jersey culture. Every state has its odd little things, be it a regional beer or soda, a particular sandwich, or a hometown musical act that contributes to that state’s unique culture. In New Jersey, in addition to the list above, we have more than our fair share. Refusing to pump your own gas is not one of them.

I refuse to play into this notion that’s been pushed the past few decades that full-service gas is part of our charm. It’s not culture, it’s lazy. While I’ve spent the majority of my adult life in Jersey I have had the opportunity to live in one of the 49 other states that allow self-serve gas. It’s not that big a deal. You pull in, swipe your card, pump your gas and leave. It’s an errand, not part of your identity.

I’m always amazed by the vitriol with which the notion of allowing a self-service option is met. Don’t want to pump your own gas, fine, don’t. The new law being debated requires stations to keep a full-service option, but the never-pumpers act like allowing people in a hurry to pick up the kids from Tae Kwon Do the option to fill up their own gas tank and move on with their lives is a slippery slope to a dystopian future where everyone is forced to pump their own gas at the tip of a cattle prod.

This is one of the dumbest debates we insist on having over and over. Pass the bill, allow self serve and let’s never talk about it again.
