The Padres shortsop’s ban over the use of peformance-enhancing Clostebol denies...
The Padres’ Fernando Tatís Jr., who recently completed a rehab stint with the Missions, tested positive for a banned substance. On a sunny Monday afternoon at Dodger Stadium last month, baseball had the sports stage to itself, and it was gorgeous. This was a perfect time for attention.
Dusty Baker looked into the cameras and said that for this hallowed honor, he’d chosen an obvious, deserving recipient — Tampa Bay lefthander Shane McClanahan. Then Baker made an admission. It was funny, and not quite true , but it also spoke volumes about baseball’s marketability issues.
Tatís is personable and bilingual, and as he’s been proving since he played minor league ball for the Missions in San Antonio, he plays with a flair for the dramatic. It’s the kind of package that has been sought for years by a sport in which two of the most exciting players toil away for the confoundingly abysmal Angels.
As Missions manager Phillip Wellman put it, “It’s not every day you get arguably the world’s best player to come join your club for a little while.” It’s also not every day that fans in a non-MLB city like San Antonio get excited by such an occurrence. Imagine, for instance, if McClanahan — the All-Star game starter — had come through town on a rehab stint.
